Magnificent Tweed

Do you enjoy the thrill of the hunt or even knowing that your clothing will be able to handle whatever the elements throw at you?  Then tweeds and Donegals are the perfect material for you. They are perfect for dreary and wet days as well as beautiful fall afternoons.  They offer a water resistant material that is incredibly durable and warm. Tweeds and Donegals are some of the most versatile fabrics of all; they can be paired with a great pair of cords or even dressed down with a pair of jeans for the more casual look.  The colors of tweed fabric are as boundless as the colors on the earth.
Tweeds and Donegals are woolen goods that are prized for their rustic, yet sophisticated appeal. Donegal tweed is rougher while Harris Tweed is sleeker and more luxurious. .  The materials of today are comparatively different than that of your grandfather or college professors.  Contemporary Harris tweeds and Donegals have evolved into a more lightweight material that befits the modern lifestyle but if you are a traditionalist, heavier Harris tweeds and Donegals are still available and are perfectly suitable. Even George Mallory who attempted to climb Mount Everest in 1924 donned a tweed jacket to protect himself from the elements.  They make the perfect materials for a fall or winter sportcoat, suit, or even a topcoat.
Did you know?  The most notable of all tweed coloring is derived from the heather covered hills at Loch Morar, which was Lord Lovat’s country home.  He commissioned the mill to recreate the brilliant colors of the hillside on his tweed fabric.  From a distance it appears green, but as you approach the vibrant oranges, yellows, and even sky blues burst off the fabric. The hard working members of society valued it for its durable and water resistant qualities and have used tweed throughout history.  Now those who play hard are wearing tweed.  Tweed has become one of the most fashionable fabrics and can be fashioned into almost anything.  There are tweed shoes, boots, sneakers, hats, gloves, purses and even motorcycle helmets.

Do I Really Need Functional Buttonholes?

A question we at Savile Row Custom Clothiers are frequently asked, "Why do I need or want functional buttonholes (working buttonholes)"?  Truth be told, you don't, unless you are taking care of something very messy while still actually wearing your suit coat or sport coat. We all know, though, to remove our fine coats before doing an emergency operation on someone, or perhaps, plucking our child's toy from the mud puddle.
What functional buttonholes do offer is that one item that sets you apart from most others.  It shows that you put just a bit more thought into your wardrobe.  If you have already experienced custom suiting or sport coats that were made with functional buttonholes try buttonholes with contrasting thread.  Normally the buttonholes on the sleeves and the front of the coat are made with thread that blends in.  Contrasting thread can pick up on the color of the stripe or check in the materials pattern.  Subtle or bold contrast?  What's your tolerance level?
To quote the editor of Esquire, "Each of the many decisions that go into getting dressed in the morning confers a little confidence, a little power, a little distinction".
